Fluid dynamics studies on FCC valves carried out in the past have shown that severe erosion on the stem [photo: top], on the guides, on the bushing and on the disc were caused by the catalyst when energized by the injection fluid. REMOSA, together with The University of Cagliari, Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been studying a new type of sealing system capable of operating without steam injection.
By carefully controlling the fluxing fluid flow rate, down to a very low velocity out of the bushing, it is possible to drastically reduce erosion. In addition, purgeless seals allow lower operating costs, coming from the absence of fluxing fluid and consequently reduced maintenance expenses.
REMOSA has designed and built an experimental prototype for purgeless stuffing box systems. The results obtained so far are extremely interesting.
The research effort also pointed towards improving the reliability of conventional stuffing box systems.
