Remosa has been using Computational Flow Dynamics to study the flow environment inside FCC valves since 1994. This research started as a joint effort with The University of Cagliari, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The results have so far provided useful operational guidelines (like the correlation between flow rate, pressure drop and valve opening, for instance) and helped to identify the areas most vulnerable to erosion. A qualitative indication of the erosion was produced for the valve stem. An engineering procedure, implemented in a spreadsheet, was prepared to calculate the valve opening in order to obtain the required pressure drop. Another procedure was written to calculate the orifice restriction necessary to reduce the pressure of the purging steam with the aim of reducing erosion due to catalyst energization. |

Extremely interesting results has been obtained by Remosa through an experimental prototype for purgeless stuffing box systems. |
